Hong-hui received her PhD from the Australian National University. There, she began studying the universally relevant Attachment Framework, to understand how our closest relationships interacting with cultural conditions and our growing-up environment affect psychological functioning.

Her attachment training has come to define her style of work.

She believes that we are the most comfortable being ourselves and performing our best when we feel psychologically safe. Thus, she prioritises upholding the psychological safety of her stakeholders in her work, whether in delivering therapy, teaching, or consulting for projects.

Therapeutic Orientation

Hong-hui’s therapeutic practice is thus grounded in the robustly researched Attachment Framework, which is applicable to all individuals with or without a clinical condition. She also employs a range of well-researched therapies that are relevant for clinical disorders and the general population, such as mindfulness, schema and cognitive-behavioural therapies, and values-driven and compassion-focused practices.

Her therapeutic style focuses on individuals’ uniqueness and strengths rather than applying an illness model that zooms in on diagnoses and deficits. She believes that the person who has chosen to give themselves the gift of therapy is a survivor - this means that we start off from a position of strengths, waiting to be acknowledged and consolidated.

Experience

Clinical Psychologist

Hong-hui has had diverse clinical experience in varied settings in Australia and Singapore - from community mental health to hospital and tertiary psychiatric services, as well as Employee Assistance Programme serving both private and public corporations.

Her extensive scope of clinical practice includes providing individual and group psychotherapy, to support inpatients or outpatients with psychiatric/psychological disorders, pain, physical, or terminal illnesses. She also works with individuals who do not necessarily have a clinical condition but may be experiencing stress, transition, loss, identity or existential crises, or issues in motivation/concentration/sleep. She has a special interest in working with high-functioning individuals seeking to lead more values-aligned, fulfilled and well-rounded lives.

Bilingual Content Creator

Hong-hui was the key author of the Wheel of Wellness (WOW) series of self-help resources at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital which have been widely distributed at mental health campaigns, adapted into corporate wellness talks and videos for public education.

As an effective bilingual, she has been key in numerous translation projects, developed psychoeducation resources, and delivered therapy and talks in English and Chinese.

Consultant for Creative Projects

More recently, Hong-hui was brought in as a consultant for the theatre production The Beginning Of Anything, part of Esplanade's March On festival for children. The play dealt with themes of exploration and new experiences.

In the project, Hong-hui lent her attachment-informed lens in the development and running of a workshop to elicit art from children that would inspire the staging of the play. She also led the conceptualisation and content creation for the accompanying resource booklet, a truly valuable resource containing rich advice for both children and caregivers/parents.

Lecturer

Hong-hui created and teaches the module “Mental Health in the Community” at Nanyang Technological University where she encourages students to think out-of-the-box while implementing mental health programmes in an evidence-informed manner.

Mother, Art Lover, Mentor

Outside her clinical practice, Hong-hui is a mother of two vivacious daughters. She has a passion for the arts, the Chinese language and mentoring keen learners of psychology.

She finds time to meddle in art and craft for her creative expression as well as with her children for play.

"The courage for daring is born out of honesty with our Self and compassion to embrace our strengths, vulnerabilities, and Inner Child."
